DEVLIN, MILLIONAIRE RACER, SPEEDS FOR THE THRILLS AND NOT FOR THE MONEY

Latest Entry in Des Moines Speedway Classic Admits He Doesn't Need Cash.

C.J.Devlin, or rather Charley Devlin, to be slightly more familiar, is the latest to enter the big 150 mile auto sweepstakes on the Des Moines speedway Saturday afternoon.

Charley is an automobile racer, who was entered in the sweepstakes race of the speedway yesterday, is also a millionaire. And unlike many of his fellow racers, he speeds for the thrills and not for the cash,

Devlin "blew into" Des Moines Tuesday with Ralph DePalma from Chicago. He is now driving a Duesenberg car. His home is Kansas City, Mo., when he stays at home, for his mother lives there. He has spent four years in the war zone, kidding about with George Boilleau, the noted auto racer.

Devlin participated in the Metropolitan handicap at Sheepshead Bay, New York, which was won bt Eddie Rickenbacher, also an entrant in Saturday's race. He narrowly missed a plunge in the accident which cost the life of Limberg, one of the drivers. His mother urged him to quit the game but the lust for speed was too much.

Charley put up at the Chamberline hotel. The speedway offices are located at 505 Locust street, less than two blocks from the hostelry. It was raining Tuesday morning. But that didn't bother Charley. He called a covered taxi, sped down to the speedway office and permitted the his taxi to stand idle for an hour while he conversed with speedway officials and gossiped with the drivers. He then re-entered the car and was returned to the hotel.
