AUTO RACES TO BE HELD AT SPEEDWAY
Events Compromise Two Motorcar and Two Motorcycle Contests for Iowa Cars.
Two automobile and two motorcycle races are on the program for the opening of the Des Moines speedway near Valley Junction this afternoon. The auto events are a twenty mile affair for Iowa owned cars and a ten mile race limited to Des Moines owned cars. The motorcycle races are for five and ten miles each, open to Des Moines and Iowa machines respectively.
The speedway management announces that automobilists will find a good road all the way to the speedway today. Since the races of last summer Valley Junction has laid more than twenty blocks of asphalt through the city, it is said.
Beyond Valley Junction the road has been treated to two coats of gravel.
The auto route from Des Moines to the speedway is west on Grand avenue to the bridge across Walnut creek, thence straight ahead through Valley Junction to Railroad street - a road paralleling the railroad tracks at the south end of the main business street in Valley Junction - thence west to the speedway.
International road racing signals as follows will be used on the course today: red flag, course is clear; yellow flag, blocked course, stop; green flag, racer entering last lap; white flag, racer must stop at pit on next lap for consultation; black and white checkered flag, racer is finished.
G. Decker French of Davenport, representative of the American Automobile association contest board, will be in charge of the races which are scheduled to start at 2 o'clock.
