TRI-STATE FAIRGROUNDS

BURLINGTON, IOWA - JULY 9, 1915

The first A.A.A. sanctioned Championship race held in Iowa was not at the Sioux City Speedway on July 4, 1914. Rather, on July 9, 1915, the small Southeast-Iowa community of Burlington would have the honor of hosting Iowa's first A.A.A. sanctioned Championship race. While it may be a technicality, the Sioux City Speedway was actually located in North Sioux City, South Dakota!

Almost one month to the day before the greatest drivers of the day would take to the boards of Des Moines Speedway, many of the same drivers would find their way to Burlington to christen the new half-mile dirt oval at the Tri-State Fairgrounds. Each would arrive with hopes of taking the lion's share of the $3000.00 purse.

Not only would the 100-miler be the first Championship race in Iowa, but it would also be the first 100-mile event sanctioned by A.A.A. to be held on a half-mile track. The event would also see the first competitive laps as a A.A.A. driver for Pete Henderson, who would drive in relief for Eddie O'Donnell over the last 25 miles.

Feedback

If you have any comments, I'd like to hear from you. Further, if you have any information about, or memorabilia from, the 1915 100-miler, tell me about it.

I have a friend looking for information on pre-WWI driver Louis LeCocq. Any information would be appreciated. Also, I am always looking for any information on Duesenberg racers which would have raced in the midwest.
