LARGE CROWD OUT TO SPEEDWAY AUTO RACES

W.J. Barndollar in Clergy Special Wins 20-Mile Race, Iowa Speed Title and Good Prize Money.

Three thousand persons witnessed the automobile and motorcycle races at the Des Moines speedway west of Valley Junction Tuesday afternoon. No accidents marred the speedfest and the affair as a whole was tame. The motorcycle ten-mile go provided most of the zip for the afternoon. Leo Leslie and Ray Miller had it out neck and neck for the first nine laps and finished in the order named.

In the main feature of the race, the twenty mile auto free-for-all, W.J. Barndollar in a Clergy special walked away with the event. His time was 16:48 4-5.

Leslie and Miller both rode Harley-Davidsons and had the crowd on its feet most of the time. The time was 8:24 3/4.

Johnny Thompson, driving a stripped Ford, finished second in both auto events. His little car ran true as a clock and finished without missing an explosion. The crowd gave him a hand. Thompson is a most nonchalant driver, and reclined easily even while taking the turns at high speed.
