CHANDLER HERE FOR ANOTHER TRY AT SPEEDWAY
The fact that he figured in a bad accident here last year in which he was nearly killed and which cost the life of "Stubby" Keeler, his mechanician, has not affected the "nerve" of Billy Chandler, intrepid race driver, who arrived here today to make preparations for the Speedway races Saturday.
Chandler was thrown sixty feet and badly injured when a rear wheel gave way on his car last year. His mechanician was killed by the accident, but Chandler recovered in such time that two weeks later he raced in the big road race event at Elgin and got inside the money. He raced but one other time that season, but has been in all the big events this year.
MANAGES TEAM NOW.
He is now managing his own racing team and with Dave Lewis will drive a Crawford in the races here Saturday. Chandler will be accompanied by Jimmy Alexander as mechanician, while his teammate Lewis will have a Des Moines boy, Jimmy Lee, as his mechanician. Lee was formerly an employee of the Mason and Duesenberg plants here.
As the local Speedway is but a mile track only ten cars will be allowed to start. For this reason Chandler will start only two cars, but if for any reason there is a shortage of entries he will start Johnson with the third Crawford.
Ralph Mulford today wired the Speedway management of his agreement to the change in the date to June 24. He will be here soon with his Hudson Super-Six. DePalma is expected here tonight or tomorrow, as well as Christiens and Galvin, the Sunbeam drivers.
