RALPH DEPALMA WINS IN LONG AUTO RACE
Famous Race Driver Cops Big Purse - Rickenbacher Third in First Event and Is Winner in Second.
Ralph DePalma won first place in the 150-mile auto derby at the Speedway here Saturday, with Pete Henderson second and Eddie Rickenbacher third. The race was a battle between these three and Earl Cooper most of the way, but tire trouble forced "Rick" into third place and Cooper into fifth place in the standings. DePalma was forced into the pit for but one tire change, while Rickenbacher was in four times and Cooper a like number. DePalma took the lead at the start and maintained it during the entire race with the exception of a brief period when Rickenbacher passed him and stayed in the lead for a couple of laps.
DePalma's time was 1:37:15.15, an average of 91.88 miles per hour. Ralph Mulford won the event last year with an average of 87 miles per hour for the 300 miles.
RICK WINS SECOND.
Eddie Rickenbacher got away without tire or engine trouble in the second race and won, with DePalma a close second. Rickenbacher, DePalma and Cooper were the three leaders thruout this race and finished in the order named. The second race was the real thriller of the day, due to the close race between the three leaders and the fact that much better time was made. Rickenbacher made the fifty miles at an average speed of 94.38 miles per hour.
The races were unmarred by any fatal accidents such as occurred last year, and only one spill occurred in the two events. In the first race the Duesenberg driven by Wilbur D'Alene had a hind wheel give way which threw the car into the safety rail at the top of the north curve. Tom Milton, also in a Duesenberg, collided with the former car and both machines skidded to the bottom of the saucer. They were both put out of the race by the accident, but none of the four men in the two machines were seriously injured.
