OFFICIALS MAY POSTPONE AUTO RACE FOR WEEK
Jupiter Pluvius Responsible - Conflict With Booster Day Threatened
BY HI HEK
The big 300-mile speedway race may be postponed until one week from Saturday, August 7, owing to the rainy weather.
Baseball boosters' day is scheduled that Saturday and officials of the Des Moines Boosters' club Tuesday night informally conferred in order to prevent a possible conflict in events.
A final conference of officials of the speedway company will be held Thursday in order to arrive at a definite decision. It is practically a certainty that the big race will be postponed as all the approaches to the track are covered with thick layers of mud. The track itself is of wooden construction and in good shape for the meet.
Wagner Attends Conference.
No elimination trials have as yet been held. The racers have been unable to drive their cars thru the mud approaches. Official starter Fred Wagner who is also the representative of the contest board of the American Automobile association, will attend the conference of officials. Wagner declared Thursday that he believed a postponement could be arranged and that all the drivers would remain over for the event.
The boosters have already put out advertising circulars, boosting Saturday, August 7 as baseball day. The fact that Des Moines is paired with Lincoln and that Lincoln makes its last appearance of the season on Saturday, Sunday and Monday is baffling the boosters more than any other matter.
Fairweather To Lincoln.
Tom Fairweather, business manager of the Battlers, left last night for Lincoln to take the matter up with Frank Isbell. He will also get in communication with President O'Neill of the Western league in order to see if other arrangements could be made whereby the game could be played on Friday instead of Saturday. The Battlers are scheduled to play Omaha at Omaha on that day but it is possible that the league head may be able to effect some arrangement to remedy the difficulty.
