OPINION DIVIDED OVER MATTER OF MORE RACES

Does Des Moines want more auto racing in view of the fatalities accompanying the inauguration of the new saucer track Saturday.

There were emphatic adherents to both sides of this proposition Saturday night when there was a report current that the big and expensive motordome might be abandoned.

Most of the talk against racing was noticeably from those who were not present when Joe Cooper plunged to his death, followed within two hours by the wrecking of Billy Chandler's speed monster.

There were many who left the stands after the after the first accident but there were more who stayed and cheered thruout the dizzy spectacle.

Plan Races for Fair Week.

Samuel Orloff, secretary of the Des Moines speedway company, said there would be further races .

"It will only make the races more interesting," commented Orloff.

"These drivers realize that they are taking chances. We have the sanction of the American Automobile association," continued Orloff. "Of course the accidents were unfortunate and we took every precaution but they happened all over. We intend to have a racing meet during fair week."

"No more of it for me," said Sam Larimer, Saturday evening, "I like sport and athletics but auto racing is too hazardous for mine. You won't get me out there again."

Mayor Not Enthusiastic.

Mayor Hanna, who occupied a seat in the judge's stand, wasn't at all enthusiastic about another race. "I hardly think it is advisable in view of all the circumstances," said the mayor.

Councilman W.F. Mitchell, of the department of public safety, said Saturday night: "I think it would be poor judgment to attempt to put on another race. Personally, I don't give a rap about auto racing, in fact, I wouldn't watch them if you paid me ten dollars an hour."

Sheriff John Griffin, who was within 25 feet of the spot where Cooper plunged to his death, while acting as director of public health for the speedway, said: "Personally, I don't give a rap for auto races. I wouldn't want to see them again. They're a bit too fast and dangerous for yours truly."
