De Palma, Burman, Oldfield Et Al to Compete in Race July 31
BY SAM ABRAMSON.
With eleven drivers already entered including some of the racing wizards in the game, the big 300-mile speedway race scheduled as the first big speed competition in Des Moines on the new mile speedway, seems assured of success.
Ralph DePalma, the intrepid Italian; Barney Oldfield, the king-pin of the daredevil racers; "Wild Bob" Burman who has smashed records galore and is one of America's veterans of the game; Eddie O'Donnell who has won many honors in his Duesenberg this season and others will participate in the long 300-mile grind on Saturday, July 31.
The first of the racers to arrive will be Barney Oldfield. His outfit consisting of two cars and his newest car, a Delage will reach Des Moines Friday night. Oldfield with DeLoyd Thompson, the aviator, who will make flights during the Oldfield trials Sunday, will arrive Saturday night or on the following morning. The Duesenberg entries may reach the city late Wednesday or Thursday and the remaining drivers will pull into camp early next week, not later than Tuesday.
The first trials in the elimination contest will be held on Tuesday, July 27. The eliminations will continue Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday before the big race, the drivers will rest while the mechanics tune up their cars.
One of the biggest crowds that ever witnessed a speed attraction in Des Moines, is expected to turn out for the racing meet. Chamber of commerce officials are actively cooperating with the speedway management to insure the success of the venture.
