DISPTUTE OVER THE WINNER
After Ralph DePalma had been unofficially announced as the winner of the race, Ralph Mulford was pronounced officially the winner after a close examination of all time records. The examination continued until after 2 o'clock Sunday morning.
The timer's recorded DePalma as having crossing the wire first.
Later examination shows that the official checkers had erred and that Mulford had won.
Three sets of markers maintained in the press stand by racing enthusiasts and F.M. Duesenberg of the Duesenberg team, formerly of Des Moines, recorded Mulford as having flashed across the wire first, three-quarters of a lap ahead of DePalma.
