MOTOR RACE SEASON WILL BE USHERED IN MEMORIAL DAY
The motor racing season in Des Moines is on. It was ushered in Sunday afternoon when two of the cars entered in the Decoration races were sent thru elimination trials at Valley Junction speedway.
Lew Clergy in his new Clergy special registered the best time - 44 4-5 seconds. Royal Duke, his teammate, negotiated one mile in 46 seconds flat. Three trials of a mile each were permitted and the best time registered. Several cars were on the track Sunday warming up.
Monday promised an afternoon of thrills at the speedway. Nine cars entered in the 20-mile all Iowa event were to be given trials and three eliminated. One of the six cars entered in the race for Des Moines cars was to be dropped from the list of competitors by the one mile test.
Speedway park will be accessible by automobile Tuesday regardless of weather, declares Geis Botsford of the speedway committee. The road thru Valley Junction will make more than two miles of the distance west of Grand avenue solid paving. In addition the road has been graveled all the rest of the way so that the park will be readily accessible by auto.
The program which will consist of two auto races at 10 and 20 miles and two motorcycle races at five and 10 miles will start at 2 o'clock.
