SPEED KINGS FLOCK HERE FOR AUTO DERBY SATURDAY
DePalma to Make Bee Line for Des Moines
Ralph DePalma, who is racing against Resta at Chicago Sunday, will make a bee line for Des Moines immediately after the race according to a wire received here Saturday night by Secretary Orloff of the speedway association. DePalma won the 300-mile event last year and expects to repeat in the 150-mile derby next Saturday.
DePalma will arrive with Galvin and Christians, foreign drivers who will bring English Sunbeams, race cars never seen before on a local track.
Starting Monday the board course will be kept sizzling with the thundering racers. Elimination trials will start Wednesday and will continue Thursday and Friday. The eliminations will be free to holders of tickets to the big race while an admission of 50 cents will be charged others. Trial spins Monday and Tuesday will be open to the public.
Every accommodation is being made for the visitors who are expected to flock here next week. An additional subway to the paddock has been built for autos. Telegraph and telephone wires are being installed, the Rock Island will run shuttle trains and all preparations are made for a record breaking crowd.
MAYOR MAC VICAR HONORARY REFEREE.
Mayor John MacVicar will take his place among the notables at the race. His title is honorary referee. Fred Wagner will be official starter and Decker French of the American Automobile association will be here in his pomp and knickerbockers.
Rickenbacker and Henderson, the Maxwell team, have been here for the past two days and both have been making preparations for the race. Earl Cooper's Stutz has been put in trim and will be taken out to the speedway today.
O'Donnell, Mulford, D'Alene and the other drivers who will compete are expected here not later than Tuesday.
LOCAL MAN COMPETES WITH KINGS OF SPEED.
While the race will attract chief interest from the standpoint of the big fellows, there will be many who will watch Bill Barndollar, the Des Moines man who captured both events in the Decoration day affair. Barndollar drives a Clergy.
