CHANDLER HERE; NOT SCARED BY 1915 ACCIDENT
With but two days in which to get their cars in shape before the eliminations trials begin, entrants for the Des Moines auto derby June 24, kept the board circle hot Monday. The best time to date was made Sunday afternoon by Eddie Rickenbacker, captain of the Maxwell team. "Rick" averaged 97 miles an hour in a practice spin.
Billie Chandler, who was injured in an accident at the south turn in last year's race, put in an appearance Monday morning. Billie camped at the Leachman-Clairborn garage and expected to inspect the speedway this afternoon. With him was his teammate Dave Lewis. Both drive Crawford cars.
"I am not superstitious and am not a bit afraid to race on the Des Moines track again," Chandler said Monday. His mechanician was killed in the accident last year.
Ralph DePalma, altho beaten by Resta at Chicago Sunday, averaged 104.5 miles an hour and if he shows anything like the speed he did in that race may be expected to repeat his victory here of a year ago. Ralph Mulford, Eddie O'Donnell, A'Alene and the other entrants are expected in the city not later than Tuesday.
