Ralph DePalma established another record in the elimination trials at the speedway Friday. He Circled one mile in 35.2 seconds, a fifth of a second better than the mark made by Barney Oldfield in the elimination trials before the first Des Moines derby in 1915.
Ten drivers who had registered the best marks in the three day eliminations were at the speedway early and impatiently awaiting the the start which was scheduled for 1:30 o'clock. Wonderful weather conditions for racing forecasted a record crowd and the fall of last year's marks.
DePalma continues to be the favorite on account of his consistent record breaking in the trials. Eddie Rickenbacker was second best in the trials Friday. He did better than 99 miles. Of ten drivers who competed in the eliminations Friday all but one, Bill Barndollar, the Des Moines entrant, registered better than 90 miles an hour.
