RAIN CAUSES POSTPONEMENT OF ELIMINATION TRIALS
STARTER WAGNER CALLS OFF FIRST AUTO SPEED TEST
Eliminations Will Start on Thursday - Speed Limit Not Yet Set
BY HI HEK
The first of the elimination trials scheduled Wednesday afternoon at the Des Moines speedway preliminary to the big 300-mile race on Saturday, was called off by Fred Wagner, official starter, and representative of the contest board of the American Automobile association as a result of the rain.
Wagner declared that it would be impossible for the drivers to get their cars to the track owing to the condition of the roads caused by the all-night downpour. The trials will probably be held Thursday unless Jupiter Pluvius again interferes.
Speed Limit Not Decided.
Starter Wagner has not yet fixed the speed limit that the fifteen drivers entered in the speedway meet must average in order to qualify. The limit will be announced following a conference with the drivers, racing officials and an inspection of the track. But twelve of the fifteen will qualify.
Drivers spent the day at the various garages where their machines are quartered, tuning them up in preparation for the eliminations. All the racers are already here for the speedway contest.
Conference of Officials.
A conference of all officials of the meet will probably be held Thursday or Friday to complete the final details for handling the race. Fred Wagner, who started the racers at the Indianapolis, Chicago and other big meets, will be in charge at the starting line, assisted bt Frank Gotch, of Humboldt, Ia., wrestling champion.
An electric timing device, which instantly records the records as they pass the judges' stand, will be installed.
