EXPECT TO GET MORE STARS
Six Pilots Have Agreed to Enter Their Cars in Des Moines 150 Mile Race.
Ralph Mulford, winner of Des Moines' first 300 mile automobile race last year after a spirited fight with Ralph DePalma, will again drive on the mile wooden speedway on Monday, June 26, when the first big race of the 1916 season will be staged by the Des Moines Speedway association.
A telegram was received last night from Samuel Orloff, secretary of the speedway association, who is in Chicago, stating that he had signed Mulford and Eddie O'Donnell for the 150 mile race. Orloff also stated that he expected to have the signatures to contracts of Dario Resta, Ralph DePalma, Earl Cooper and two European drivers within a few days.
Mulford and O'Donnell Sign.
Mulford and O'Donnell are both well known on the local track, Mulford and DePalma clashed at the finish of the 1915 race owing to a mistake in the checking of the laps by officials in charge of the meet. The race was first unofficially given to DePalma, but later Mulford's protest was heard and he was pronounced the winner. DePalma was second and O'Donnell third.
Cash prizes aggregating $10,000 will be hung up for the racing drivers. Two races will be held, the program starting off with the main event, the 150 mile race, and ending with a 50 mile free-for-all.
Barndollar Also Signs.
W.J. Barndollar, the Des Moines driver who captured the state auto contest at the speedway track on Memorial day, has also signed for the 150 mile race, making a total of six pilots who have already entered. The list includes Mulford, O'Donnell, Barndollar, Chandler, D'Alene and Milton.
Secretary Orloff conferred with Fred Wagner, official starter of the American Automobile association, regarding the local meet. Wagner may be selected to start the drivers. He was in charge last year.
The Des Moines race has the official sanction of the American Automobile association.
