LESLIE AND MILLER DIVIDE HONORS IN MOTORCYCLE RACES
The auto racing season was officially opened at the Des Moines Speedway, near Valley Junction, yesterday afternoon. A crowd of 5,000 persons witnessed the races held by the Des Moines Speedway association.
The races staged on the Speedway were up to expectations, but the time between events was so long that the crowd on a number of occasions became impatient and yelled at the officials to start the races.
Yesterday was the first time this season that the followers of auto races heard roaring motors and the barking exhausts at the Speedway.
The auto races were the feature events on the program, but the motorcycle races proved to be the most hotly contested and interesting of the two.
Leo Leslie and Ray Miller shared honors in the motorcycle races. The former won the 10-mile race and took second in the 5-mile event, while the latter took second in the 10-mile and copped the 5-mile. The time for the 10-mile was 8:24 3-5, while the 5-mile race took 4:07 3-5. Verne Dygert finished third in both motorcycle races.
W.J. Barndollar in a Clergy Special easily won both the 10-mile and 20-mile auto races. John A. Thompson in a Ford won second in both races. Royal Duke in a Clergy took third in the 10-mile race and also in the 20-mile event.
"Red" Shafer, who was expected to finsih one or two in both races, was forced to quit on account of engine trouble.
